sound drivers may have not been installed when windows was reinstalled? or the onboard soundcard coudl ahve broken sometime in between the re-installation. only two things i can think of. go into control panel>sound and audio>sound and audio devices, run some tests, makes sure all the input.output areas are set correctly.

Um go to controll panel under speach audio and recording devises go to speakers check there and if you have a spectial keybourd that makes the volume mut press the button or something or find the disk if there is one to the speakers and reinstall them if necessary to do so.

Right.. Shadow_Ace.. Do you know if it's a seperate Soundcard that's in the Pc ? Or if it's an Onboard ?

You could try and go into BIOS when rebooting.. You usually do this by pressing DEL once, when the System Boot Screen appears..

In the BIOS you should be able to find something like "Onboard Devices" Or Manage "Onboard Devices" is there a sound option here ? Also, if there is, which one ? If it's a newer Pc, it'll probably say MAXAudio AC97 or something.. If there is, Change it from "Disabled" to "Enabled" and reboot + safe settings. Then windows should be telling you about new hardware..

The reason to why there's nothing in device manager is that you haven't installed any drivers..

And if there is no "New Hardware Found" popping up, before you did the BIOS thing, chances are that we're talking about an On-Board Soundcard.. But get back to here once you've found out..

If none of this helps, try and run the "Add Hardware" from the Control Panel.. If this won't help either, I'll do a search for a program which I forgot the name of, that can identify everything in your pc.. Like Manufactors of the stuff you've got etc..

That is typical of old computers. My guess would be that the card is an expansion PCI card. Maybe ISA, but the following principle applies for both.

Take the case apart, don't forget your flashlight, maybe you can find what you need without removing the card. What your looking for is manufacturer and a serial number.

Image

You can see at the top left hand side and again on the black box there, thats the MODEL NUMBER. You can easly tell on this card, thats a creative audology 2. On another card prehaps, you may have to find the serial number.

If you can get that information you will be able to identify your card, once you do that, finding a driver is simple.

ONCE YOU COMPLETE THE ABOVE:

visit www.driversguide.com and register for their free site. All you need is a valid email address. Then use their easy interface to find your card's drivers, then dowload and install. If you did your job right, the sound will now work, assuming its just a driver problem.
