Finally had a chance to see "Seven Samurai" - considered by many to be one of the best films of all time. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, but you have to be in the mood for a 3.5hr film with subtitles...
1954 Japanese film co-written, edited and directed by Akira Kurosawa. The film takes place in Warring States Period Japan (around 1587/1588). It follows the story of a village of farmers that hire seven masterless samurai (ronin) to combat bandits who will return after the harvest to steal their crops.

You'll notice many famous movies that have "borrowed" scenes or even the entire plot of this movie. The "Magnificent Seven" is almost a carbon copy..

The characters, dialogue, cinematography, and plot of this film are all superb, so check it out

Akira Kirosawa is a fantastic movie maker. Here is a couple of my favorite:
Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Ran
Yojimbo was also emulated by several films like Lats man Standing (Bruce Willis) and Lucky Number Slevin (also Bruce Willis).
Ran is one of those long epics that is only really appreciated by those who are a little familiar with ancient Japanese culture, specifically the fuedal system and Bushido.
If you watch the original Magnificent Seven, it credits Seven Samurai as the base of the film. |
